Site Name: Noosa Spit.
Address: Hastings Street, Noosa Heads.
Directions: From Tewantin follow the Noosa River along Hilton Terrace, then Gympie Terrace and Weyba Road. Take Noosa Drive to Hastings Street. Turn left at the roundabout and follow it to the end.
Description: The spit itself overlooks the Noosa River bar and offers the opportunity to see birds such as terns, gulls, osprey and cormorants. Be wary of the Pied Butcherbirds who will take a sandwich from your hand! There are a myriad of tracks between the Spit and Hasting Street, worth exploring.
In the late 1970's the mouth of the Noosa River was relocated to the north-west, and Noosa Spit was constructed extending from "Noosa Woods" across the old river mouth to protect the newly created residential area of Noosa Sound from inundation and erosion from ocean and river. The Beach Protection Authority planted sand-stabilising plants of Casuarina equisetifolia, Banksia integrifolia and Acacia species.
"Noosa Woods" was originally an area of littoral rainforest beside the old Noosa River entrance. The vegetation became degraded and diminished between the 1920s and the 1980s through overuse as a camping ground and in 1990 camping was removed and the Woods were opened up as a public recreation area.
Since this time, Noosa Council, with community input has progressively reinforced the vegetation on Noosa Spit and "Noosa Woods" so that it is highly valued by residents and visitors. It forms an important link in a chain of recreational areas which include Noosaville Foreshore, Hastings Street, Main Beach, Little Cove and Noosa National Park. A popular
network of boardwalks and walking tracks connects the chain.
The Noosa Parks Association has a 20 year agreement with Council to establish the NOOSA PARKS ASSOCIATION PARK on the spit and voluntary members work regularly planting, mulching, watering, creating tracks and removing weeds.
