Site Name: Great Sandy National Park - Elanda Point.
Address: Lake Cootharaba.
Directions: From Tewantin follow 'Tewantin / Boreen Point Road', to Boreen Point then proceed along the edge of Lake Cootharaba to Elanda Point. Stop at the National Park parking area on the right before the grid. The National Park information boards here give general information about the area as well as details of the walking tracks.
Description: Melaleuca swampland borders the lake. Beyond the swampland is open eucalyptus grassland. This site contains well defined and sign posted tracks of varying lengths. Interpretive signs along the 2k Heritage walk to Mill Point tell of the saw milling history of the area. The walk to Kin Kin Creek is approx. 3k., and to Kinabar Information Centre 4k. For the more energetic observers there is Fig Tree walk, approx. 9k. and Harry's camping area approx. 14k. or even longer walks for those who wish to carry a tent to camp over night. There is also access to Lake Cootharaba from the National Park parking area to launch a canoe.
Birds: Bush Stone-curlew, Mistletoebird, White-bellied Sea-Eagle. A full list of the birds recorded from this site is available within the Noosa Bird Trail bird species checklist here.
Signage: Follow National Park signage and directives.
Parking: Park near the information boards.
Condition: There is something suitable for all levels of fitness.
Facilities: None. The adjoining private Elanda Point Campground, beyond the grid, currently charges day visitors $2.50 per person but you must be out by 5.30pm or $7 camp fee applies. Facilities here include picnic tables, toilets, drinking water, hot showers, amenities block, and small general store. Canoe hire, available from the store allows the fit person to explore the lake and further up the Noosa River. Cabins are available, with meals provided, for a minimum group of 20 people.
