Site name: Mount Cooroora Forest Reserve.
Address: Mountain Street Pomona.
Directions: From Old Bruce Highway take Pioneer Road into Pomona. Turn left into School Street which turns into Mountain Street. Cooroora Park is on the right.
Description: This is the home of the now world famous, Pomona King of the Mountain race. The established race track goes up Mt. Cooroora - 458 metres above sea level. Competitors need to be fit to tackle the challenge of this race, as the track is four kilometers long, steep, and often slippery. There is a fire break track off to the left (as you face the mountain) where observers are welcome to walk. Once past an old quarry, proceed on a wide, mowed track through mixed vegetation of casuarina, turpentine, acacia, and eucalyptus. The track ends near the ranger's office. Return the same way or walk the road back to Cooroora Park.
Note There are other fire breaks in the area where observers are welcome to walk. The fire tracks are not formalized for public use. They are there for management purposes and the protection of the forest. They are often used for vehicle access. Users must accept responsibility for their own safety, be aware of their own bearings/ position at all times, and abide by any directive from Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPWS) and Department of Primary Industries (QDPI) Forestry staff. If logging or fire operations are evidently in progress in a State Forest, in a site discussed in this brochure, then access to that site is prohibited.
