TEWANTIN NATIONAL PARK (formerly Tewantin State Forest)
details
At least 20 years of intensive behind the scenes lobbying State Government has at last paid off with the Bligh government finally declaring the 780 hectare forest Tewantin National Park.
The new national park is three times the size of the headland section of Noosa National Park and wraps around the west of Tewantin from Eumundi Road to the Tewantin-Boreen Point Road.
"It has been a long campaign to get the former State Forest protected. For 20 years we have had to fight to keep it out of the hands of loggers, and then more recently we've had to ensure that the forest was not 'flogged' to the highest bidder as part of the recent sell-off of Queensland's state forests to the private sector," NPA Vice President and spokesman Dr Michael Gloster said.
Dr Gloster said Tewantin National Park will protect rainforest, open eucalypt forest and wallum remnants between Tewantin and Cooroy.
"It protects Mt Tinbeerwah, a volcanic plug remaining from volcanic activity millions of years ago," he said. At 265m high, this panoramic part of the Noosa Biosphere is one more natural treasure under environmental lock and key.
"A sealed 130m track at Mt Tinbeerwah provides access to a lookout for a 360-degree view over the Noosa River system with its string of lakes, the coast and forests"
